2. Here are some ideas for your next holidays

• If you are flying off for work, why not combine business with pleasure? - set off earlier to eat, drink and visit the local attractions before the real work starts, or choose to extend your business trip by a few days. The money saved from your air ticket goes a long way to pay for your extended accommodation and food.

• Going on a backpacking adventure is like a rite of passage into adulthood. Consider backpacking if you have just finished university and are taking a break before working. Stretch your budget by looking for cheap airfare, affordable accommodation and food outlets so that you can experience new and emerging travel destinations. Budget airlines have frequent flights to these destinations where accommodations are really affordable.
• For those who have been on student exchange programmes, consider going for a home stay. Airbnb has really thrived since its launch as travellers also enjoy mingling with their local hosts to learn more about the local culture. Tips on a safe homestay are also available on its website.
• If you are on a sabbatical, do something different to rejuvenate. Try bartering your labour for a free stay on a farm. Stay close to nature by looking after horses in wild Tasmania or milking cows in New Zealand for a once in a lifetime experience.

• Bring along a travel adapter and multi-USB plug to charge your various gadgets.
• Find out the local attractions available from your accommodation provider.
• Get a prepaid sim card during your time abroad so that you won’t be overwhelmed with mobile roaming charges.

As Gen Y travellers go on holidays more frequently, they will have more bang for their buck with annual travel insurance plans included in their travel checklist.
